Get moving for our wellbeing, our community and our planet.
Walktober is a challenge held each October to celebrate International Walk to School Month. School communities are encouraged to get moving by walking, wheeling and choosing other active and sustainable ways to travel throughout the month.
In Hampshire, Walktober has been organised annually by Hampshire County Council's Travel Planning Team since 2016. This year, more than 100 schools and settings are taking part, encouraging pupils, staff and families to improve their health and wellbeing while reducing car journeys, improving air quality and easing congestion in local communities.

Top Tips, More Trips
Inspire and motivate others this Walktober.
This October, we're inviting children, pupils, staff, volunteers, parents and carers to share their top tips for active and sustainable journeys.
Whether you regularly walk, wheel, scoot, cycle, Park and Stride, use shared or public transport or, as part of Walktober, decide to try it for the first time, we’d love to hear your top tips!
Do you cycle to school, your setting or work once a week? Use Park and Stride every day? Or perhaps you've recently travelled by bus for the first time to visit a friend? By sharing your journey, experiences and advice, you can inspire others to travel differently. Plus, your entry could help your school or setting win a prize!
Every eligible entry from children, pupils, staff, volunteers, parents and carers counts towards your school or setting's Walktober total. The school or setting with the highest number of eligible entries, relative to its size, will be crowned the Walktober 2026 winner. The winning school will be able to choose from a range of exciting prizes that support outdoor exploration and learning, including wildlife and nature resources, gardening equipment, vouchers and more.
Pupil entries will also be entered into the pupil competition for a chance to win books, nature-themed games, outdoor exploration kits, vouchers and other great prizes.
How to enter:
- Tell us about your journey - how you travelled and what the purpose of your journey was. You could tell us whether it was a new journey or part of your regular routine.
- Share your top tips for others - what information or advice could encourage someone else to try a similar active or sustainable journey?
- Be creative - you can choose any format to present your top tips. Writing, drawing, photography, video or audio recording, it's up to you.

- Your school or setting may have a collection point for entries or be able to assist with submitting entries, so please ask a member of staff.
- The competition closes on Friday 13 November 2026. Please read the competition terms and conditions before entering.
The Top Tips, More Trips entry form will be available from the start of Walktober
