Vikki's story

Vikki was a beneficiary of Cycling UK's Big Bike Revival for Key Workers project, funded in Southampton by the Department for Transport and also by Southampton City Council through its Access to Sustainable Travel Fund. She was able to get a half price second hand bike from Monty’s Bike Hub, a social enterprise based in Sholing, which provided cycling services to key workers as part of the Big Bike Revival initiative.

Here's what she has to say:

“I have not cycled in about 10 years and due to health issues and the gym being closed I had to take up some low impact exercise. The first week I was pretty rubbish and was impressed that I cycled one mile! I am now aiming to cycle to work two to three times a week. It is only a four mile round trip but I'm trying to change my routine. My daughter has also had a go on my bike and has loved it.

Thank you to Monty’s for their kind and prompt service, they were very helpful.”

We caught up with Vikki a few weeks after using her new bike and she told us:

“After six weeks of having my bike, I now cycle the long way to work. It is quite hilly where I live so there are lots of new challenges and new routes to take. I can now get to nearly 10 miles which is a big wow compared to how I started on my first week. Most drivers have been curious when seeing me out on the road and I'm enjoying not being stuck in a car on my commute.”
