Sustrans School Streets Southampton

My Journey recently supported partner organisation Sustrans, the UK’s walking and cycling charity, to close the streets outside selected schools in Southampton. The initiative was part of a mass UK-wide street closure event that aimed to highlight how active travel improves air quality and safety on the school run.

Locally four roads were closed outside the following schools schools: St Monica’s Primary, St Mary’s CE Primary, Fairisle Infant and Junior and Sholing Infant and Junior. The event gave families the opportunity to enjoy a car free journey to school at drop off and pick up times and to enjoy the space outside their schools safely.

Following initial analysis of feedback from the event:

92% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed that the road felt safer to use

93% of respondents supported a street closure happening more regularly outside their school

2,325 active journeys to school recorded in four of the six schools involved

Well done to everyone who got involved to encourage and experience the benefits of walking, cycling and scooting to school.
