Improved cycle facilities at Saltmarsh junction

As part of Southampton City Council's Cycling Strategy ongoing improvements are being made to cycling in Southampton work is taking place at Saltmarsh junction – (City side of Itchen bridge) junction between Saltmarsh Road / Central Bridge / Albert Road North / Itchen Bridge.

Works include – improved cycle facilities at junction:

  • Early release at signals for cyclists on Itchen Bridge and Central Bridge arms of junction
  • Cycle activated signs to raise awareness of cyclists using junction
  • Formalised off-road left turn link from Central Bridge and Albert Road North Road
  • Improved signage of subway link under Itchen Bridge to Chapel Road route into City
  • Advanced Stop Lines for cyclists at signals
  • Ramped access to subway resurfaced (already delivered) 
  • Works will also see the removal of the two stage right turn at this junction.

Works will be carried out as night works (8pm-6am) to minimise disruption to users. Monday and Tuesday night will see the closure of Albert Road with three way signals running for all other arms. Wednesday and Thursday night will require the closure of Saltmarsh Road with three way running signals of all other arms. Footways remain open throughout. Please check with bus operators regarding any changes to services.
