One (well, 10,000,000) small steps for Southampton...

Yesterday, Tuesday 10 October, was a great day for celebration in the city centre. #StepUpSouthampton officially came to life outside Westquay shopping centre – My Journey’s city challenge to swap one short car journey and walk 10,000,000 steps together.

Alongside the challenge, My Journey helped to raise awareness of the positive benefits walking has on our own wellbeing and health – benefits that were celebrated globally yesterday, for World Mental Health Day.

As part of #StepUpSouthampton, you can now claim a free voucher to spend at Mettricks coffee house when you come to visit us outside Westquay, 10am - 4pm, every day until Saturday 14 October. You'll be entitiled your free voucher when you can demonstrate you have walked at least 5,000 steps towards our target.

Councillor Hammond, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Living, came to support the #StepUpSouthampton launch on Tuesday 10 October.

He said: ‘I’d love the city to get behind the #StepUpSouthampton challenge and walk 10,000,000 steps together – I’ll be swapping my drive into work for a 2.5 mile walk! Walking has a real positive effect on people’s mental health and wellbeing – and making the switch can encourage healthier travel habits that make Southampton a more sustainable city with cleaner air, and a happier place to live and work in.’

You can claim one free Mettricks voucher every day when you walk 5,000 steps - so the more you get involved, the more the more rewards you can enjoy!

Catch up with our very own Walk Doctors from Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, who can offer advice and practical tips of how we can get more steps into our every day. Why not come down and find out how you can easily get more walking into your daily routine?

#StepUpSouthampton with us this October, and help your city walk 10,000,000 steps
