Fairisle Junior School strike gold with green travel initiatives

Pupils from Fairisle Junior School have been awarded a golden rose to celebrate receiving their Gold award from Modeshift STARS. The Gold award is the highest accolade on offer and is awarded to schools that have achieved a noticeable reduction in car usage through their efforts to promote sustainable travel on the journey into school.
Fairisle Junior School is one of only four schools in the Southampton area to have reached this milestone. They have achieved this by taking many steps to promote sustainable travel, such as encouraging families to park and stride and installing a bike shed and scooter pod and hosting Bike Skills sessions to improve pupils' confidence.
To mark the occasion, the school's Head Girl and her deputies planted a Golden Smile Rose outside the entrance to the school, to remind pupils every day of their fantastic achievement. The presentation of the rose was followed by an assembly, where Assistant Head teacher and School Travel Champion Holly Cleveley and Head Teacher Peter Howard were presented with a certificate and the all-important Gold Star to complete their Modeshift STARS plaque.
