Challenges for Primary Schools

Your school can take part in various active travel challenges throughout the year run by My Journey and our charity partners Living Streets, Sustrans and Energise Me.

The Big Pedal - 23rd April - 4th May 2018

Sustrans’ annual Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge. Each spring, schools compete to see who can get the most pupils, families and staff members to arrive on two wheels. The more that do, the greater the chance to win some fantastic prizes from bike and scooter storage to cycle stunt shows by the UK’s best riders. The competition is weighted according to the size of the school, so everyone has a fair chance to win!

Scooter Challenge - 18th - 22nd June 2018

My Journey run an annual scooter challenge week in the summer term to encourage pupils to ride their scooters to school. Schools simply log whether they came to school by scooter (or bike) each day and email their results to the School Travel Planning Team.

Walk to School Week - 21st - 25th May 2018

Primary schools can take part in the five day walking challenge, either alongside WOW or as stand-alone activities. The challenges aim to engage pupils and their parents in regular walks to school.  The  five-day walking challenge is designed to offer primary school pupils a burst of walking activity and the month long challenge helps pupils start to feeling the benefits of regular activity.

The Golden Mile

The Golden Mile is a safe, simple and measurable health & physical activity initiative accessible to all pupils regardless of age or ability. They can simply walk, jog or run around the Golden Mile track within the safety of the school grounds and then use the downloadable resources to upload the number of laps achieved and compare scores each week. Visit the Golden Mile website for more information.
